How are you dealing with all the fear and anxiety in our uncertain times? We talk this week with former Navy Seal Mikal Vega, who has been to the brink and back. He shares with us some of the practices that saved his life. The traditional route fighting depression with SSRIs failed him, so he found what worked for him-- modalities like Kundalini yoga, sensory deprivation tanks, acupuncture, massages, and meditation.

Whether in a war zone or at the grocery store, the easiest and cheapest way to handle stress is to learn how to properly breathe so that you can down-regulate your nervous system. Breathing is something that we certainly for granted and yet is so powerful.

We covered a lot of ground in this episode, including

  • His definition of being a warrior
  • How everything starts and ends with love-- the universal truth
  • What it’s like to be on the front lines
  • How do you deal with intense levels of fear every day
  • How to come back from life-threatening injuries and the emotional trauma associated with them
  • How he found peace amidst all the chaos in his life

Mikal Vega is a combat veteran that served 22 years within the Naval Special Warfare (Navy SEAL Team) and EOD (bomb squad) communities. While deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and while manning the turret of an HMMWV, an IED detonated dangerously close while returning from an otherwise uneventful mission. The injuries sustained included severe cervical trauma, ulnar nerve damage, and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI). He has since created The Vital Warrior Program to help active military and retired veterans find peace and deal with their PTSD. He has created an album that is available on your favorite streaming platform called Vital Warrior.

In this Episode, Sam inspired me to write my Book #2 by sharing her magical book-writing framework that makes outlining a book and writing it super simple. She took away any great excuse I’ve had to procrastinate to get to writing!

Sam is a prolific author who specializes in helping people crystallize their communications and write their books. She is truly one of the most clever people I have ever met!

Sam is Founder and CEO of the Intrigue Agency, and she’s done 3 TEDx talks and written 9 books. One of her most well-loved books is called Tongue Fu!, which gives you an idea about how clever she is. Another book of hers that I absolutely love is called POP, which is all about naming and pitching things. If you are a business owner -- you know how important this skill is!

Sam is an internationally popular speaker, and she is also one of the founders of the Maui Writers Conference, which is like the Cannes film festival for writers. She has helped countless writers by teaching them and inspiring them-- and she has definitely just inspired me to get my second book done!

If you’ve been a loyal listener you’ve likely picked up on this already… I consider myself an iconoclast by nature, meaning I’m a nonconformist-- a questioner. I value personal Sovereignty and Freedom.

The Wealthy Wellthy podcast is about busting myths and taking things apart with people who see the world through a different lens. Most of the guests I’ve had on the show are also iconoclasts-- counter-culture thinkers who challenge the narrative and status quo in their fields.

Personally, I never want to stop having challenging conversations with brave people who, like me, will always be willing to change their minds and listen to others’ points of view.

In this episode I interviewed Dave Rubin, author of the New York Times bestseller, “Don’t Burn this Book.” Dave is the creator and host of The Rubin Report, the most-watched talk show about free speech and big ideas on YouTube with 1.2 million YouTube subscribers and over 275 million views. I like to think of his show as similar to mine, in that he wants to interview anyone and everyone open-minded enough to have a challenging and enriching conversation.

A former progressive turned classical liberal, he speaks to millions all over the world-- and he’s very entertaining, because his background was stand-up comedy. Originally from Long Island, New York, he currently lives in Los Angeles with his husband, David, and their dog, Emma.

And if you’d like to know more about what “yours truly” has been up to lately, I invite you to visit SovereigntyAcademy.com.

Again, please enjoy my interview with Dave Rubin, whose birthday happens to be on the release date of this podcast. Happy Birthday, Dave!

On today’s episode of the Wealthy Wellthy Podcast, I’m joined by Hans Knol. Hans has mastered the art of Airbnb and he owns a thriving Airbnb business without actually owning any real estate. He is helping real estate investors, agents, brokers, and entrepreneurs achieve a stable recurring income by providing teaching and coaching with his BNB Brokering Masterclasses.

As an Airbnb super host myself, I learned a ton from this conversation, Hans and I discuss the mindset of a successful host and how to structure an Airbnb business as an actual business. He shares the secrets on how to set up properties intelligently to break through the noise and competition. We talk about how to market properties to keep a full calendar with the technologies and tools that most don't know about that can make all the difference for a healthy real estate investment income stream.

This information is very relevant right now in light of what's going on in the marketplace. As a host, my very nice Airbnb income vanished overnight as my reservations and bookings for the next three months canceled. So I'm taking this time to upgrade my properties, improving my systems, and implementing what Hans recommends to be well-positioned and highly competitive for when people start booking again. For anyone with an Airbnb property, listening to these tips is important and it may be what carries you over the other side. If you don't have an Airbnb yet, now might be the time to put this strategy in place.

On this episode of the Wealthy Wellthy Podcast, I’m joined by Michael Fishman. Michael has spent the last 20 years as a leading advisor on marketing, positioning and sustained business growth to consumer health information and product businesses. He supported Rodale Inc. in growing the Prevention and Men's Health publishing brands, taking their book business from ground level to $300M per year, and consulted for brands such as Hint Water, Athletic Greens, Vital Choice, and Jigsaw Health along with admired personalities Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Christiane Northrup, Dr. Daniel Amen and a long list of others. Michael leads the annual Consumer Health Summit, the private invitational gathering for founders, which he created in 1994. In his varied talks, he shares how marketing language, customer care, and work culture combine to take companies and personal brands from merely good to the beloved best at what they do.

In this conversation, Michael and I discuss growing your business by being purposeful. He shares that the personal brands which see the greatest growth and following are the ones that back their mission with purpose and authenticity. We talk about consciousness and the role it plays on scaling and customer satisfaction. And how so many fail to realize that authenticity and realness produce results much greater than the “latest” marketing ideas. Michael shares that the most common roadblock for a founder scaling up is getting in the way of their own growth and not “letting go” of having a say so in every decision. He makes a clear distinction between being your brand and being a part of your brand, what he calls “humanizing your brand.” At a time when so many personal brands are focused on being a seven-figure company, Michael brings it back to ground level stating that focusing on impact and results for clients is the true ticket to a successful brand. If you want to learn more about how to grow and scale with purpose and true impact, you’ll want to check out this episode.

On today’s episode, I talk with Shawn Wells, MPH, LDN, RD, CISSN, FISSN. Shawn is an expert in the fields of performance nutrition, longevity, fitness and supplementation. He holds a master’s degree in nutritional biochemistry, is a Registered Dietitian, and spent over a decade as a Chief Clinical Dietitian in hospitals and nursing facilities. Shawn is now the CEO of Zone Halo Research, a consulting group for supplement formulations, sourcing, manufacturing, marketing, and regulatory/compliance work.

Shawn is a renowned leader in the realms of health and peak performance yet in this conversation, we take a deep look at being present and the missing truths about wellness far beneath all of the bio-hacks, diets, and fads. Despite being wildly successful, Shawn shares that every achievement has only led to another chase in search of the next level of success. We discuss the achievement mindset and the idea that getting “there” will create happiness is wrong and only leads to a continuous chase without a finish line. Rather than chasing the next big milestone Shawn says true fulfillment lies within being more present in the world and indulging in self-love. Although he's a scientist, we go deep into the world of energy and health, the forces that feed the mitochondrial health of ourselves beyond just the physical. Shawn shares his take on "the grind" and how so many focus on work with their head down they miss the opportunity to appreciate life and the real connection happening around them. If you’re interested in how to become more present in your life and even a few bio-hacks, you’ll want to check out this episode.

On this episode, I chat with John Lanza. John is a well-known expert on youth financial literacy, and the co-founder of Money Mammals, a company on a mission to help parents raise money-smart kids. He is also the author of The Art of Allowance, a book that teaches parents how to set their kids up for financial success at an early age. John has spent over a decade talking to parent groups and credit unions about the importance of raising money-smart kids. He teaches the value of starting money-smart conversations early to empower youth and families to be wise about their finances.

In this conversation, John shares the dos and don'ts behind an allowance that works and sticks. He talks about the biggest mistakes parents make when they teach their kids about money and the best age to start teaching your kids financial literacy that will last them the rest of their lives. We discuss his techniques to help children distinguish between needs and wants to help raise non-spoiled financially autonomous children. John gives great advice to parents with teens who compare themselves with peers, to better understand the value of larger purchases. If you have kids in your life you'd like to start teaching the art and science of money, you'll wish to listen in.

John’s Three Jar Method

When it comes to starting your children’s financial journey, John has a three jar method as a starter financial framework:

  • The Save jar - teaching children to pay themselves first

  • The Share jar - to understand charitable giving
  • The Spend Smart Jar - giving children spending power to buy small items

John’s Three Fundamental Principals

All parent's frameworks are not exact, but there are three core principals that should be a part of every plan:

  1. Distinguishing between needs and wants
  2. Setting and saving for goals
  3. Being intentional about choices and making money-smart decisions

Using the S.M.A.R.T Goals Method

When teaching children about the value of purchases, using this acronym can help children understand how to set a goal for saving and successfully reach it while getting a feel for planning to reach their goal.

Specific - setting a specific goal to reach

Measurable - being able to measure progress to reach the goal

Attainable - understanding what’s attainable

Relevant - Is the purchase relative to their wants or needs

Time-based - understanding the time it takes to reach the goal

Do you love yourself as much as you should?

Laura knows a thing or two about gratitude and self-kindness.

Today on the Wealthy Wellthy Podcast I chat with Laura DiBenedetto about techniques for creating more joy and abundance in life.

Laura started her entrepreneurial journey at a young age starting her business at just 19 years old and eventually becoming a nationally recognized marketing company. After working with hundreds of executives and business owners to take their businesses from struggles and plateaus to expansions, profit increases, and mergers and acquisitions she decided it was time for a change. Laura put together a plan and exit strategy from her company then retired at the age of just 37. In a spontaneous twist, she started a passion project that ultimately led to her writing her self-help book about how to powerfully manifest joy and abundance, developing a companion independent coaching program, and a 90-day life-changing program

In this conversation, Laura and I discuss achieving and feeling true joy in life with simple methods for shaking the funk of self-doubt and replacing them with rock-solid confidence accompanied with deeper connection. Her optimistic perspective on an adverse time of domestic abuse is admirable, despite being in a traumatic relationship, Laura says there’s always something to be grateful for, even if it’s not easy to see at first. She gives 6 “master habits” that if followed have the potential to create more gratitude and happiness, she also shares a 3 step practice to help instill more self-kindness. His work includes studies and publications on spirituality and medical care, whole foods to heal the human body, and integrative medicine to heal where Western medicine falls short, not to mention he's a leader in the field of hormones for optimal health and longevity.

During our conversation, Shawn shares a personal story of losing his mother to ovarian cancer and despite his vast knowledge of women’s health, he was left feeling helpless not being able to help her. This led him to begin researching integrative medicine and spirituality, which ultimately resulted in him acquiring his PhD in mind-body medicine. Dr. Tassone walks a balance between allopathic and alternative medicine understanding there is a place for traditional medicine as well as holistic healing depending on the patient’s condition and preferences. Shawn is an expert when it comes to women’s hormones, he shares tips and warning signs we all should be aware of and what to do when you just don’t feel right. He is a big proponent for normal hormone levels being specific to each individual, even if your levels are in the “normal” range they may not be normal to your body. We discuss how hormones play a crucial role in how we feel, think, and behave. He discloses that for some even if they're off just a bit, they can negatively impact sleep, weight, mood, and success. Just a few lifestyle tweaks can make a radical difference to not only how we can feel better in our own bodies, but also our relationships and performance. In other words, if you want to feel more love, make more money or just feel better and have more energy with good vibes you'll wish to listen in.

While most—especially listeners here—would agree health is TRUE wealth... there’s also an undeniable connection between your health and financial wealth.

One example of this: stress has already been linked to the six leading causes of death—and a recent study by Northwestern Mutual found that money was by far the leading source of stress for Americans.

It’s also true that when your energy is low—especially when you don’t know why—your income and stress levels suffer. This can create a negative cycle that is very hard to break free from. It’s also why I’m so excited about today’s interview...

Because in this episode of the Wealthy Wellthy Podcast, my guest may just have the answers you have been searching for. His name is Warren Phillips M.S.—he’s a serial entrepreneur and wellness innovator who had to overcome a life-threatening condition caused by extreme toxicity. By cracking the code on what he calls “true cellular detox” Warren transformed his own life (including his financial well-being) and has helped tens of thousands of others do the same.

Warren started his career not as a business owner, but as a credentialed geologist studying the impact of synthetic chemicals and environmental toxins, which empowered him with a unique understanding of toxicity effects on the human condition. In today's episode, Warren shares why detoxification is more important than nutrition for your health, wealth and longevity.

I've learned a ton from him personally and I'm thrilled to have him as a guest, especially since extreme toxicity is what nearly took my life a few years back. If you have lower energy and are living with more stress than you would like, this is a must-listen, and I'll be participating in The 90-Day True Cellular Detox™ Challenge. So if you wish to join me start by listening to this episode and check out the link below for more info.

I promise after you listen in, you'll want to take the challenge.

Today on The Wealthy Wellthy Podcast I interview Eric Brotman. Eric is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), Accredited Estate Planner (AEP®), Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA®) and the CEO of BFG Financial Advisors, an independent firm assisting clients with wealth creation, preservation, and distribution. He is also the host of the “Don’t Retire… Graduate!” podcast, a show dedicated to teaching listeners how to advance into retirement rather than retreating into it.

In this conversation, Eric and I cover wealth and financial planning on many fronts. We talked about how to prevent yourself from outliving your money, what steps should be taken at each phase of life to lead to financial independence.  We share similar views on income and wealth, one does not equal the other. Eric shares that debt is the number one impediment on financial independence and how wealth is not as reliant on math as it is on financial literacy. Are you looking to retire (graduate) early? Eric and I discuss the F.I.R.E. methodology, which stands for Financial Independence Retire Early, and that achieving financial independence doesn’t require being “good with numbers.” It’s never too early (or late) to start planning your financial future, so if you’re ready to start building your freedom plan, you’ll want to check out this episode.
